Throw open the windows and put on the screens…here are some simple ways to get your home ready for summer!
- Incorporate colors indoors that are seen through your windows….but do it subtly so the views are still center –stage.
- Get you guest bedroom ready for summer visitors with pretty pastel all-cotton linens, add a touch of white for a crisp look, make a garden arch headboard and twine the lattice with silk flowers.
- Hang a collection of summery botanical prints in an entry way, display floral plates on a hutch or mantle, frame a collection of postcards or photographs from your favorite summer getaways.
- Renew your favorite reading chair with a slip cover sewn of light-colored fabric; relocate it next to a window overlooking your garden.
- Roll up heavy winter rugs and replace them with bordered sisal rugs, drape side tables with summery floral or sheer fabrics, put a tray on the coffee table filled with seashells on a bed of sand.
- Set a colorful table with a vibrant array of acrylic tableware, add a vase of fresh flowers and keep the menu simple with cooling foods.
- Place your bath time necessities in a seashell shaped container or unused picnic basket- use pretty white or pastel towels.
- Add some horizontal relaxation space to your backyard with a chaise lounge or hammock filled with pillows for that lazy afternoon siesta.

How about some fresh summer ideas….for your window treatments!
- All the summer markets forecast layering as the new direction for windows – layering of panels, valances and even dual shadings. Add sheer panels and tiebacks to your existing window treatments. Use both sheer and decorative panels on the same curtain rod or choose sheer panels in several pastel colors and shirr them onto the rod for a striped look. Add a perky valance in a blooming print or bright tropical colors to your vertical blinds and horizontal blinds.
- There’s one common thread to these summer looks- they’re lighter in scale, more feminine, and come in pretty colorings of pink, ice blue, rose, red, or blush peach. Many of you have asked how to clean your cellular shades. Here are the cleaning instructions straight from the manufacturer.
Cellular Shades
Regular Cleaning
- Dust with a feather duster.
- Lightly vacuum fabric with an upholstery attachment.

Soil Removal
- Sponge with a mild detergent and warm water solution and blot dry. (Extra care should be used when cleaning blackout fabrics, as the fabrics could become permanently creased.)
- Do not use strong detergents or spot removers. Dry cleaning is not recommended. Due to the differences in ultrasonic cleaning operators, we do not recommend this method of cleaning.

Grand Taste with Outdoor Spaces |
Designers see three reasons for the burst of interest in designing and furnishing outdoor spaces: It’s a way to increase the livable space, it’s a way to bring interior style and luxury outdoors, and it’s a way to create a leisurely sanctuary in the midst of a hectic life. The “building blocks” for outdoor furnishings are their materials: woods, metals, rattan/wicker, stone, and fabric.
Woods
The woods that are used for outdoor furniture are teak and mahogany. Teak is extremely durable in its natural state and can be further enhanced by stains and finishes. Mahogany, an age old favorite for boat building, is also impervious to the elements. |
Metals
It used to be that iron was the outdoor metal of choice, well not anymore. Iron will rust easily if not properly treated and taken care of. In its place, we now find aluminum and stainless steel. They are both lightweight and strong and can withstand the outdoor elements.
Rattan/Wicker
Wicker furniture is traditionally made out of rattan or bamboo. The problem is that neither is weather resistant. Many outdoor furniture makers now use an extruded polyethylene resin that can be woven, just as the natural materials can. |

Stone
Stone has been used as outdoor furniture since the beginning of time. Recently it has been used on table tops and around pools. Of course, stone is naturally water proof and comes in so many colors and shapes and sizes, the possibilities are endless. |
Fabric and Trim
The most change in outdoor spaces comes with the use of fabric. It used to be that the fabric you put outdoors would fade and wash out. They were also very susceptible to mildew and mold. Now with the advent of acrylic/polyester fabric combinations, we have a fabric that withstands nearly all weather. The colors even stay true through out the summer sunshine months.

Proven Performance SheerWeave Sunscreens
Shades combine the elegance of Phifer SheerWeave® fabrics with the proven performance of the spring roller or cassette hardware system. Styles 2000, 4000 and 5000 have a 5% openness factor.
Headrail Style
The standard SheerWeave shade is supplied with a cordless spring roller system. The fabric falls to the back of the shade for maximum Light-Filtering.
Cassette Headrail System
Cassette Headrail System is an optional upgrade. Using an integrated concealed white deluxe headrail and valance system the front of the cassette will have a fabric insert. The fabric used for the insert will be the same as the shade. A color coordinated off white continuous loop beaded chain system is standard and features a cord tensioner for all cassette headrails which complies with CPSC guidelines for child safe products. Cord length is normally half the length of the shade in 12" increments.

Bottom Hem
The standard bottom hem is finished using a white metal straight hem. Black is available upon request.
Energy Efficiency
Energy Smart Sonata Sunscreens improve the energy efficiency of windows by reducing solar heat gain in the summer.
