Versatility to the Max
Many people think of roman shades in a "hobbled" or tear drop shape as they cascade down their windows. What many may not realize is the versatility a roman shade offers. If you are a modern thinker with modern sensibilities, then you may want to go with a flat roman shade. A more traditional thinker will favor the hobbled roman shade. These style preferences actually vary by region. The south favors the hobbled-style roman shade and the rest of the country favors the flat.
Flat shades are quickly becoming the more popular of the two. They offer a simplicity and versatility. They are an effective way to display fabrics, to show off prints, and to add an aesthetic interest. Roman shades themselves pair well with almost any window treatment imaginable. Valances, Scarves, swags, and cascades; you name it, roman shades will coordinate with it. Often light to medium colors are ordered over dark colors. Roman Shades

Roman Shades 1 It's true that hobbled shades are an ideal solution when a full drapery look is desired, but with our homes attaining a more modern look, flat roman shades have started outselling the tear drop or hobbled shade. The most popular roman shade is now made out of woven wood, for that natural look. People want something with a rich texture as the backbone of their room. It allows them to use more materials and get a better overall design with the room. BlindsOnSale offers all these styles and more! Roman Shades 2

Who's The Boss?
Barbara Rolen Many of our customers already know this fabulous woman, but its time to delve deeper into Barbara Rolen, Co-owner of BlindsOnSale.com. I had the pleasure of interviewing her this last month. So without further a due, here is that interview.

Q: Why did you decide to go into the window covering business?

A: I was tired of seeing people spend their hard earned money on window fashions they did not know anything about. I wanted to have a business that educated customers before they bought. There are many times people will call and not really know what they want. We walk them through the decision educating them along the way. After all, informed educated customers will be the happiest with their window fashions.
Q: How long have you been in business?

A: We have been selling window fashions specifically for over 16 years. We have been in the Interior Design business for over 30 years.

Q: Why do you think BlindsOnSale has the most loyal customers in window fashion?

A: We at BlindsOnSale research and know every end of our products. Buts it's more about getting the right product for the right décor. Even when customers have mess ups we do everything we can to make sure that the customer ends up with the right product. That is way our slogan is "Our passion is your window fashion." When we say it, we mean it.

"…After all, informed... customers will be the happiest with their window fashions."

Q: In your opinion, with so many options out there, how should a customer start shopping for window coverings?

A: first and foremost is function. Decide what the window covering should do for you. Do you need a full view? Do you need blackout? Does it need to tilt open and closed? Then you need to decide between a fabric shade for a softer look or a wood blind for a crisper edge.

Q: What is the single most important decision in window coverings today?

A: Color is one, and style is next. They both go hand in hand. If you are not happy with the color, it does not matter what window covering you bought. If you're not happy with the style, you have to look at it everyday.

Q: Do you have the products you sell in your own home?

A: Yes, I have the Woodlore plantation shutters, also Comfortex plantation shutter blinds, and Graber Crystal Pleat cellular shades. I coordinated all of them with custom made drapes. If you decorate right you will never have to replace your window coverings, they will always be in style.

Q: What is the most memorable experience in your 16+ years of selling great window fashion?

A: Ah yes, our very first Internet order. The customer lived in California right on the ocean. She needed a window covering that would give her privacy at night, but allow for a great view during the day.

"It always gives me a fuzzy feeling to see us helping people. It's why I do this."

Comfortex Window Fashions Window Decorating Sale! We recommended the Comfortex Shangri-La. This was back in 1998. She loved the shades so much she is now a decorator as a hobby and together we have put together beautiful window-scapes that have even taken my breath away. Many customers over the years have sent pictures and testimonials of how great their blinds look. It always gives me a fuzzy feeling to see us helping people. It's why I do this.

Q: What is your prediction on the next wave in window fashion?

A: The best selling products will still be 2" Horizontal products.
People who are in their home for 5 years or less will buy these. However people who are staying in their home will go towards upper end fabric shades for the elegance and permanence of it.

Thanks so much to Barbara Rolen for sitting down with me and letting me interview her. If you would like to know what shades look best on your window, please give a designing consultant a call at 1-800-919-4301.

Designer Tips and Trade Secrets
The days are shorter, the nights longer - it's time to stop looking through that bare, black hole of a window and get it ready for the upcoming winter and holiday season!

Raise Your Room Temperature!
As the temperature drops outside, adding color, texture and window treatments will dramatically change a room from cool to warm and cozy. Adding panels and a top treatment can be just the thing to warm up a room (lined treatments act as an insulator). It's a perfect time to change out your existing window treatments with wood blinds or cellular shades … their insulating properties will keep rooms warmer all winter long (and cooler next summer!)

Soft Treatment Trends for the Winter Season
• French flip panels
• Unusual pleated headings on panels - inverted, goblets, cartridges, ruching
• Color-blocked columns of fabric
• Classic swags and cascades with dressmaker details

Holiday Decorating "Buzzwords"
You'll be hearing a lot about these holiday decorating trends as the season approaches!

Warmth
You'll be seeing a lot of the warm side of the color spectrum - sumptuous reds, oranges, pinks, honeys and yellows. Create distinctive color schemes for the holidays with one or more of these colors. Pinks and reds are perfect for a nostalgic or Rococo-themed holiday.

Retro/Pop
Op-art patterns, strong contrasts, graphic looks - the attitude that "The Future is now!" Don't discount the classic looks as produced by the great couture houses - Chanel (tweeds and boucles), Pucci, Courréges, Mary Quant.
Think back to the 50's and the flocked tree with pops of brilliant color for your inspiration. Retro/Pop looks work in traditional settings as a wonderful contrast that creates variety, making a room or window come to life.

Shock
The colors aren't new - clear, bright hues - but the interest is in the combination and schemes. Can't find the right fabric for your holiday window decorating scheme? Create your own! Alternate panels in "shocking" combinations like fuchsia and berry, or coffee bean and citrine, on multiple windows.
• Applied
Layer design techniques and methods in the room and on the window. Layered, feminine, girly looks are window treatments hottest new trends.

It All Adds Up to Pretty Decorating!
Take a lesson from the fashion runway and consider tweeds, plaids and stripes mixed and matched in panels and top treatments.

Buy some of the fabulous new brooches and pin them on tab top panels or use as holdbacks - buy several and attach them all the way down the edge of stationary panels for a sparkling effect.

The Birth of a Trend
As a consumer, it's great to be "in-the-know" as to what will be the next new interior design trends. But do you ever wonder where those trends come from? As a forecaster, I will share five of the factors that will indicate where trends start. Watch these trends, and you, too, can forecast what will be hot next.

Economy
When the economy is down, people feel pessimistic about their lives. The colors they tend to gravitate to have a dirty, muddy undertone. When people feel optimistic, they will tend to gravitate to cleaner, clearer colors.

This year, we have a mix of optimistic and pessimistic colors. No one palette is more important than another. Watch the grays to become the new neutral. If your style is contemporary, mix in a lipstick-red color with the gray. If you are more traditional, try cream as a wonderful accent to the new gray.

No matter what Hunter Douglas product you choose, you will find a color to complement your decor and lifestyle. If it's blinds you want, you have about a billion choices in wood and metal.

Apparel
Forecasters watch which colors, prints and textures people are wearing. They know if people are comfortable wearing a trend, they might also be comfortable living with it.

Forecasters generally watch women's fashion. Think of your favorite department store and how much floor space is devoted to women's fashion as opposed to the men's department. Women are the trendsetters for fashion as well as being the colorful creature in fashion. Citrus greens have been a fashion statement on and off the runway for women. But if my husband came home with a lime-green blazer or jacket, I might wonder about him!

Call 1-800-919-4301 to price your Luminette, Silhouette, or Nantucket Window shading by Hunter Douglas.
How many of you bought a garment made of chenille, velvet or velour? It might be a solid or burnout velvet. Have you noticed how the fabrics are the hottest fabric in interior design? We all thought that velvets died when Elvis did, but I guess since he has been spotted, so have velvets!

What has been the new color in fashion? Gray.
It could be solid, but it's also showing up in tailored menswear prints. It can be worn by men, women and sofas alike.

As you might guess, it's appearing in the latest interior design trends. Look for a wonderful mix of neutrals to showcase these looks.

Another trend that started in ladies fashion is sheer fabrics.
Not just the sheers of my mother's generation, but beautiful, visually interesting sheers. Watch for tablecloths. You will find these sheers in window covering products such as Hunter Douglas Luminette® Privacy Sheers and Silhouette® window shadings or Nantucket™ window shadings. These are gorgeous sheers with the plus of privacy.

Comfortex Shangri-La Shades
Comfortex Shangri-La Shades Shangri-La is the ultimate in beauty and design and performance. Shangri-La combines the light control of horizontal blinds with the elegance of sheer fabric. With Shangri-La you never have to choose between an open window and an open shade. Shangri-La's Omni-View cord system gives you full motion, full flexibility and full views in every position. Shangri-La's Sheer versatility makes it a perfect window treatment.

As light streams in through the translucent sheer fabric, see your world become softened with Shangri-La. Adjustable fabric vanes can be opened or closed, as you like. And unlike any other window shading available, Shangri-La can be raised with the vanes still open. Shangri-La is available in beautiful decorator colors with a choice of head rail styles and extra wide widths that cover what other window shadings can't.

Fabric Collections
Shangri-La Window Shadings are available with two different fabric vanes. Eternity fabric gently filters light while Moonlight cast deep room darkening shadows. Please note that Moonlight is not a black out fabric.

Shading Operation
Shangri-La Window shadings feature the Omni-View Cord System.
The Omni-View system provides the ability to manipulate the shading into various viewing positions. From the closed and retracted position (fabric inside the headrail), lower the fabric by pulling down on the rear of the loop cord until you reach the desired shading position.

Once lowered completely to the window sill, continuing to pull the cord in the same direction will open the horizontal fabric vanes offering varied views to the outside. Continuing to pull the cord in the same direction will lift the shading while still in the "view-through" mode.

Click the link to the left to order your Comfortex Shangri-La!
To retract the shading, simply pull down on the front of the cord until the shading reaches the desired viewing mode or fabric position.

Viewing Options
The Omni-View System provides a number of varied views to the outside for controlling lights and privacy. Consequently, there are variations in visibility though the shading when the vanes are tilted to their maximum open positions. The following five modes can be obtained with standard shading operation when viewing the shading at eye level.

Closed top, open bottom-By partially lowering the shade from the fully raised position, the upper portion of your window will become semi-opaque while allowing a clear view below.

Fully Private- When lowered completely, Shangri-la provides complete privacy and softly diffuses light.

Partially open- Opening Shangri-la will gradually increase the level of light, allowing varying levels of "view through."

"View through" when lowered-provides a soft veiled look of the outside.

"View through" when raised- continue to pull the cord from the open position, you can raise the shade and still have the vanes open!
